Verified as Natowa Government
The Government of the Commonwealth of Natowa has announced that citizens will vote on whether the nation should adopt a new national flag, following growing discussion that the current design reflects Natowa's monarchical past more than its present-day democratic government.
The current flag was adopted during Natowa's early history, when the country operated as a monarchy. Although Natowa transitioned to a democratic republic in March 2026, the flag has remained unchanged.
President Gavin Norberg announced that the decision would be left to the public through a national referendum.
"Our flag is one of the most recognizable symbols of our nation. As Natowa continues to grow as a democracy, it is appropriate to ask the people whether they believe our national flag should better reflect that identity."
Under the proposal, voters will choose between retaining the current flag or adopting one of several new designs that place greater emphasis on democratic values and national unity. Citizens will also have the opportunity to submit flag designs before the final ballot is prepared.
Government officials stated that the referendum is intended to encourage public participation in shaping one of the country's most important national symbols rather than erase Natowa's history.
Supporters of a new flag argue that the current design remains closely associated with the nation's former monarchy and no longer fully represents the Commonwealth's democratic institutions. Those in favor of keeping the existing flag argue that it has become an important part of Natowan history and national identity regardless of the country's change in government.
The government has confirmed that, if voters choose to replace the current flag, the existing design will continue to be recognized as a historic flag of Natowa and preserved in official records.
A date for the referendum and the release of the proposed flag designs are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
